Ingredient lists, allergen warnings and origin statements tell you more than front-of-pack marketing. A short guide for European shoppers.

EU labelling rules require clear allergen information and ingredient lists in order of weight. That makes it easier to spot when nuts are mostly carrier oil and flavouring.

1. Check the first three ingredients

On a quality nut product, the nut itself should dominate the list. If sugar, palm oil or flavourings appear first, you are buying a confection more than a nut.

2. Allergens and cross-contact

Tree nut allergies are serious. Always read bold allergen statements and contact the producer if you need details about handling in the facility.
